Election 2010 – Behind the Scenes

I thought I’d add this post to explain a little about the behind the scenes process working on the Election and generally working in virtual spaces.The virtual studio at Gray’s Inn Road uses a set of tracked cameras which know where they are in 3D space. All of this tracking data processed is fed to renderers and using Viz virtual studio and some clever ‘under the bonnet innovation’ we created virtual 3D graphics which give the appearance of whole studio which works exactly like a real one, albeit with the added flexibility to move assets relatively easily. The are many downsides to working in virtual, but this was our preferred solution for this project. We were able to populate information graphics in key areas.

ITV News Rebrand

I worked with Lambie Nairn and ITV Creative on the relaunch of ITV News. I worked with my team on building a set a guidelines creating for bespoke 3D and information graphics. this look was always carries through to al of the ITV News regions.

This was part of the broader rebrand of ITV. I managed the design and implementation of the new look, which included overseeing the creation of the opening titles and the implementation of full-frame graphics. Working with Simom Jago (BDA Creative) and Jim Mann (Lightwell), we built the new studio using our ground-breaking Viz Virtual Reality technology, introducing a set of virtual plam screens which carried a bank of monitors, a technique which has never been done before. The rollout also included a reskin of the ITV.com website.

US Election 2012

The coverage of The US Election on ITV was based on the concept of the periodic table with each state representing an element. The Opening titles used this as a motif with images of of Obama and Romney during their caompaigning. As ITV were simulcast with NBC in the states for key results we needed to make sure our design was complementary with the US coverage whilst retaining our own visual identity. Using our Virtual Studio technology we were able to reskin our News set in keeping with the election feel.

The Movie Show on ITV2

ITN Productions were commissioned to relaunch the The Movie show. Hosted by film critic James King the show is a round-up of new film releases featuring interviews with Hollywoods A-list, The idea was to create opening sequence inspired by Hollywood. The sequence is an explosion of colours and light which resolve around cinema signage which brands the title of the show

The Royal Wedding

Creating the overall look for ITVs coverage of The Royal Wedding. The Brief was to come up a solution which would work across the network on Daybreak, This Morning, ITV News and ITV.com and feel traditional yet accessible. In the UK, 5.3m tuned in to the programme hosted by Julie Etchingham was a huge success for ITV and captured the spirit of nation.

ITV Election 2010

For ITV Election 2010 it was important that the information graphics were clear and easy to understand. For the centrepiece of the studio we created a 20ft virtual wall. Complex election data was then simplified into some key graphics on the night, including a The Election Battleground which was controlled by the Julie Etchingham via a virtual touchscreen.

ITV News


ITV wanted to bring their network news more visually in line with ITV1s brand to create a flexible strong visual identity. Working in collaboration with BDA Creative. I lead the design team which brought this vision to life. Delivering an opening sequence which seamlessly transitioned to an epic 3D Virtual studio. And implementing strong iconic on-screen packaging and bespoke content graphics. This project won two Gold Promax/BDA.

News at Ten Rebrand (2008)

After a 6 year hiatus ITV relaunched News at Ten which saw the return of Trevor McDonald. ITV wanted a design which would brought back the heritage and authority of News at Ten, but which also gave the news a gravitas and sense of modernity. The opening titles were based on the original 1992 titles. Animation and post production work was done by the MPC.

To complement the epic opening titles, we created a stunning virtual news studio with a glittering panorama of London’s Skyline. I designed and art-directed on this project, creating a new iconic News at Ten logo and the on-screen packaging.
